College scholarships for those people majoring in veterinary medicine and veterinary science are widely available; we’ve identified some of the top funding opportunities for applicants today:

1. American Kennel Club (AKC) – The association that oversees the registration of purebred dogs and oversees breeders has an active interest in seeing that vet majors succeed. To that end, the AKC awards $135,000 in college scholarships annually.

2. Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) – Several scholarships are awarded annually through the AAVMC, some of which involve a writing competition for applicants.

3. Campbell Family Scholarships – Full four year scholarships are available through the Banfield Charitable Trust, an organization that focuses on pet care. Banfield operates more than 700 pet hospitals across the USA.

4. F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) – If you win this award, then U.S. Army Reserve enlistment will be required. However, the HPSP award is a full scholarship with a monthly allowance included.

5. Saul T. Wilson Jr. Scholarship Program – Through the offices of the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Inspection Program, assistance is available for high school through graduate school students. Check out the USDA’s related internship program too.

6. Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (HRSA) – Not every student entering college arrives on equal footing, some are clearly at a disadvantage, a gap that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is trying to close. Open to students of veterinary medicine, the HRSA program covers students from every state, district and U.S. Territory.

7. The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine – Prestigious Tufts University offers dozens of endowed and annual college veterinary scholarships to their students.

8. The Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England – Recognizing that the cost of education has risen sharply in recent years and that vet students are graduating with plenty of debt, this veterinary trust has established a program offering approximately ten different scholarships annually.

9. TLC/for The Love of Cats Veterinary Scholarship Program – Cat lovers who plan on majoring in veterinary medicine will want to check out this program which annually offers one generous award for up to $20,000. At least one year of previous service to cats is required.

10. Western Veterinary Conference (WFC) – Up to 32 third-year veterinary students can receive $2500 in college scholarship funding from the WFC. Winners are invited to attend the annual WFC conference in Las Vegas each year, an excellent networking opportunity for scholarship recipients.

The Vet Social Network is a professional and social network for veterinary students and veterinarians. It’s a great way to get involved and stay up on what’s going on in your field or area of interest.

2. VetsU

At VetsU, you’re sure to find your tribe. This site claims to be “the most comprehensive social network focused solely on the animal health industry.” VetsU is open to anyone in the veterinary field and allows you to connect with others in a secure environment. A cool feature of this site is that you can upload documents to share and easily search through the files of others. You’ll find videos, blogs, and specialty communities here as well.

3. Student Doctor Network Forums

The veterinary forums at Student Doctor Network are for either pre-veterinary students or current veterinary students and professionals. You can join in on the forum of your choice to get real advice from your peers and from practicing veterinarians. You’ll find information on the best schools, the do’s and don’ts of the application process, and detailed information on your area of study. You can even make plans to get together with your virtual friends in real life.

4. Student American Veterinary Medical Association

The SAVMA is an offshoot of its parent organization, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and shares the same mission “to advance the science and art of veterinary medicine, including its relationship to agriculture and public health.” There are 29 chapters with over 10,000 members. Even students studying abroad can become associate members. An advantage to this group is that leadership opportunities exist at both the chapter and the national level. Membership benefits include available loans for sophomore students and above, group health insurance, and access to a career development center.

5. Veterinary Student Network Abroad

The VSNA is exclusively for veterinary students wishing to study or currently studying abroad. It’s a website by students for students, allowing veterinary students from around the world to contribute and to share information. When you join VSNA, you can create your profile and have immediate access to real-time chat rooms. You can even get hooked up with a mentor and contact alumni of your institution. It’s a great way to learn about schools and about the culture of the country where you hope to study.
